About Sue Mundy
I grew up as one of six children on the edge of a small prairie town, St. Charles, Minnesota. With constant whining and money from my paper route, I was able to get and keep a pony. She grazed the grassy allies and open areas in our neighborhood. I rode Cinnamon on my paper route and folks referred to us as the pony express. A little later the cornet fell into my hands. While practicing, I was urged many times to "Take that thing outside!" After a couple of years, the neighbor's complaints turned into song requests. My mother was a natural musical talent on piano and voice, so all of us were encouraged to sing often with her accompanying.
My art inspiration started with my Aunt Donna who worked creating signs and designing windows for the Kahler Hotel in Rochester, MN. I attended Winona State University focusing on Music and Fine and Commercial Art and studied painting with Don Schmidlapp. To get myself through college, I sang and played trumpet with a five piece band performing all styles of music in area night clubs.
In the course of this artistic journey, the commercial and graphic arts jobs pay the bills while I pursue my vision. These have included a career at the Mayo Clinic as a Computer Graphic Scientific Illustrator, a Flame Glassworker, and proprietor of the Pembroke Gallery in Wabasha, where I taught children's art lessons, painted signs, murals, benches, made historic restorations and other work for private and civic venues. Most recently, I've been fortunate enough to work with the National Eagle Center in Wabasha to create four educational exhibits using my mural painting skills. I also keep my chops up playing the cornet with the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band of Red Wing. All of my emotions finally have an outlet through color, shape, dimension, sound and song.
I've been painting and creating for thirty @#$$% years, yet, I still feel like I am just beginning! I hope I feel this way all of my life!
I live in Dumfries, Minnesota, just seven miles from Wabasha with my very supportive husband, John, my horse, Maruse who keeps me honest, and our cat Ruby, who reminds me of my place in life.
